Artist Statement

I am a portrait painter working primarily with oil on canvas. My figural paintings explore ideas of perception and identity. Identity is comprised of everything from the moment we are born to this moment right now. We exist in a constant state of transition and renewal. We are forever in the space between the familiar and the unknown, living in a constant state of flux. This transitional space, or liminal space, allows our psyche to develop in a way that leaves transformation open and unobscured. My current work comments on this transformation, featuring feminine figures set in vast white spaces that ask us to confront the in-between: the distinction between space and non-space, place and non-place, truth and possibility. They ask us to confront the things we use to define ourselves, while the white space holds a place to break away from these ties.
