As a recent graduate and emerging artist, my art revolves around forging connections through the ceramic creations I produce and the people I’ve met along the way. I am committed to crafting functional pieces for everyday use—whether it is utilitarian ware in the kitchen, or sculptural work that enhances living spaces. The journey from initial concept to final creation unfolds over days or weeks, offering a repetitive yet soothing experience. The resulting pieces not only embody my personal sense of tranquility, but also contribute to seamless integration of daily activities for those who welcome my art into their homes. It brings me immense joy to hear that others not only appreciate the aesthetic of my art, but also find it to be functional.
My artistic inspiration is deeply rooted in the rich traditions of Japanese and Korean pottery. Much of my aesthetic is influenced by one of the earliest potters I learned about and idolized, Warren Mackenzie. I predominantly use stoneware clay and throw almost all of my work on the wheel, altering it to achieve the desired form. I am particularly captivated by the natural effects achieved in atmospheric firings, especially glazes that produce iron and copper hues, combined with the simplicity of elegant forms. Utilizing atmospheric firings enables me to emulate the distinctive styles of these pottery traditions, resulting in a diverse range of themes that explore ideas of process, meditation, and functionality.
Ultimately, my ceramic forms represent a fusion of experimentation, creative exploration, and a nod to historical utilitarianism. Each piece serves a practical purpose while conveying a unique narrative through its aesthetic and functional qualities, reflecting my journey as an artist.
