My name is Dave Zander and I am a long time art teacher in Eastern Carver County. My art style is to discover the soul of a scene or animal and then apply my brush and colors so that the viewer can see how I feel about my subjects. My hawks aren’t necessarily fierce, but they do mean business. Contrast is very important to me. I use only the whitest of papers and pure India ink for the blacks. This allows my pastel colors to sing. I do not apply a “wash” because this would eliminate the stark whites I need to magnify my colors. My mentor was Professor Malcolm Myers of the U of M and he constantly taught me to “draw with the brush” and pay close attention to composition. The stark black metal frames and bright white mats of my framed works also reflect this contrast.
